Reverend Henry J. McPake

Born: 9/25/1867

Died: 11/10/1897

This rare, original cabinet card photograph captures Rev. Henry J. McPake, a man forever linked to one of America’s most infamous serial killers — H.H. Holmes, the "Devil in the White City." McPake, a Philadelphia clergyman, played a pivotal role in the final chapter of Holmes’ life, serving as his spiritual advisor during the murderer’s imprisonment. He walked Holmes to the gallows at Moyamensing Prison in 1896.

Rev. McPake was present during Holmes' final confession, hearing the killer’s chilling last words before he was led to the gallows. According to legend, many of those who took part in Holmes' imprisonment, trial, and execution met untimely or mysterious fates — a string of tragedies that became known as the "Holmes Curse." Some believe McPake himself wasn’t immune to this dark legacy, as he himself was brutally murdered on November 10, 1897 (18 months after Holmes' execution). His body was found near the rear of the Church of the Annunciation on Dickinson and Tenth Streets in Philadelphia, PA. His killer was never found and this case remains unsolved to this day.

Reverend McPake is buried in Holy Cross Cemetery in Yeadon, PA. This is the same cemetery where Holmes' unmarked grave is located.

This cabinet card, a popular photographic style from the late 19th and early 20th centuries, offers a haunting glimpse into the life of a man who walked alongside one of history's most diabolical minds in his final days. It’s an extraordinary find for collectors of true crime, macabre history, or rare Victorian-era photography. It is also in near perfect condition which is remarkable for the piece being over 129 years old.
